Responsive web design (RWD) is an aspect of web design that ensures a page renders well on the device being used. This aspect requires a web page to adjust to the user’s environment in terms of resolution and orientation. A web page with RWD alters its layout to that of the device from which it is being viewed and it achieves this by combining flexible images, media queries, and fluid. The field layout concept requires the page structure to be in relative units (percentage) and not outright units such as pixels. Flexible images like fluid layout must also be in relative units and not an outright unit in other to prevent the image from falling outside its containing element Global Faces Direct.

RWD has become a more relative topic because the amount of traffic generated by mobile users is beginning to constitute most of the total internet traffic. This leads to the need for Google to bring about Mobilegeddon. This was done sometime in 2015 in other to make web pages more accessible by mobile phones. This helped RWD improve User Interphase Plasticity (the ability to absorb variation in the point of assessment of a web page and still protect its usability). As the user moves from using a laptop to a mobile device, the web page is also expected to adjust to suit the new resolution and scripting ability. RWD saves time and money but most of all, it enables one access a web page with the best possible convenience.

Luke Wroblewski proposed that RESS (responsive web design plus server-side) can produce a user experience more friendly to mobile phones when compared to RWD. It, however, costs more to develop RESS, therefore, it is mostly used by bodies with deep pockets. This is why Google endorses the use of RWD for mobile devices over any other method

Responsive web design can be verified by different methods like Mobile Site Validators used to perk up testing tools. The use of RWD will rise as the use of mobile devices to access websites increase.

Responsive web design faces some challenges. One of them is the fact that some web banner or videos are not fluid. Also, it can sometimes be difficult to develop an interphase accessible by mobile devices and still maintain the quality of the site as the viewport decreases. A viewport is the size of the site from the users’ point of assessment. It is usually bigger on computers and laptops but for smaller on mobile devices
